Martha Kirby Capo is a poet and a lyricist with whom I've collaborated on several projects (including Threnody and Beloved, My Home).

When embarking upon this orchestra work, I invited her to write some poetry that would become the programmatic inspiration for the work.

She wrote several poems, and I used four of the poems or their concepts as inspiration for the music:

• Man in the Maze - used for Movement 1
• The Colorado River
• The Gila River - used for Movement 3
• The Railroad - inspiration for Movement 2
• Phoenix - inspiration for Movement 4
