À la manière de la neige is a purely impressionistic work that draws its inspiration from Debussy’s piano prelude entitled Des pas sur la neige (“Footprints in the snow”). It is a gentle work that slowly shifts into and then out of darkness.
The difficulty of this work stems from the careful pedaling, intentional choreography of the hands and fingers, and gentle coaxing of the lines needed for the intended melodic lines to be heard as distinct voices. Most of the music is written on two staves, and which hand covers two staves changes over the course of the work.
